There are three different tricks on the screens: (1) drop the bottom screen-plate in at an angle with the mash tun full of water and let it settle in (2) dust the silicone ring with grain dust and slide the screen-plate manually into the malt pipe dry and (3) spray the dry malt pipe and dry silicone ring with Star San and slide the screen-plate in manually.Īnother GF issue is hops clogging the barrel-shaped filter intake screen. It's not clear whether the disparity is due to slight differences in tolerances between units, learned technique (or lack of it), or both. The fact is that some people seem to have no trouble after quickly getting the hang of it and others are tearing their hair out. For that price the Grainfather is the better buy here hands down. However, Anvil came with a good marketing campaign and a couple inexpensive upgrades, such as extra holes in the mash bin, a slightly different controller which reads temps tighter, and is located higher, the first switchable power supply 120/240V in these units and threw in a cheap stainless immersion chiller which does not really compare to a counterflow immersion. The Anvil came in late to the game and basically ripped off the Mash and Boil, it was hard to tell the units apart during the first release, it's highly likely they are made in the same factory. They unfortunately never fixed their two piece mash bin which I agree is the annoying part of the unit. They also upgraded the included counter flow wort chiller, and have a host of add ons designed for the unit.

However, they have been good with warranty claims and have since upgraded to a PID bluetooth controller with an app that allows you to pre-program mash temps, set alarms, controll temp, all from your phone, or go old school and control it manually. Note: make sure it is a new connect version of the GF, you can tell by the controller, the old controller has a red alarm clock style screen. In a rental car analogy the Mash and Boil is the compact, the Anvil is the intermediate, and the GF is the standard, some would even venture the premium. In all actuality the GF is in a higher class. If you can get a GF for $450 buy it now it is the best on the market for this class of brew systems.
The Mash and Boil was the first to get a reliable unit under the $300 (more reliable than the GF BTW), which is basically a no frills watered down version of the Grainfather, and the Anvil is basically a rip off of the Mash And Boil that was slightly upgraded and we'll marketed. The grainfather is the electric all in one system that was first to market under $1000 bucks.
